Materials
You need the following materials to make this mandala:
- Yarn: About 20 grams / 0,7 oz Scheepjes Whirlette or similar, like Hobbii Twister Solid or Hobbii Friends Wheel. I used the colors Delicous and Almond Butter.
- Hook: 2,5 mm.
- Hoop: which size hoop you use, depends on a combination of the hook, yarn and if you crochet loose or tight. I would therefore recommend to buy a hoop once you finished crocheting. My version turned out 30 cm / 12 inch.
- Notions: scissors, stitch marker, tape measure, tapestry needle.

Attaching the mandala to the hoop
To determine the right hoop size, measure the diameter of your mandala and add 20% (multiply by 1,2). Round this number to an available hoop size. For a 30 cm / 12 inch hoop, the diameter should be about 25 cm / 9,85 inch. Here are 4 ways you can attach the mandala to the hoop:
- Use pieces of yarn and a tapestry needle to fasten the mandala to the hoop at certain points. If you want to cover the hoop, you can wrap yarn around the hoop first.
- Crochet the mandala into the hoop. Use sc around the hoop, and attach a part of the mandala after an x amount of stitches.
- Threading the mandala in the hoop. Take a long piece of yarn and thread it along the hoop and hoops of the mandala.
- Attaching the mandala to the hoop with jump rings.
I created a video showing the different ways to attach a mandala to the hoop. You can find the video on YouTube: youtu.be/UbAYOcB213c
It’s in Dutch, but it has English subtitles.
