Abbreviations

The pattern is written in US terms

ss = slip stitch
ch = chain stitch
dc = double crochet
fpdc = front post double crochet
ch-loop = chain loop

Special stitches

1fpdc1+1dc together = double crochet 2 together where the first part is a fpdc and the
second part is a dc. Crochet the fpdc part always around the fpdc part of the previous
round (not the whole stitch), except in round 23.

1dc1+1fpdc together = double crochet 2 together where the first part is a dc and the
second part is a fpdc. Crochet the fpdc part always around the fpdc part of the previous
round (not the whole stitch), except in round 23.

1fpdc+1dc+1fpdc together = double crochet 3 together where the first part is a fpdc, the
second part a dc and the third part a fpdc. Crochet the fpdc parts around the fpdc parts
of the previous round (so not around the complete stitch).

Click here for a video tutorial of the special stitches. It is in Dutch, but it has English subtitles.

Notes

The * * indicate repeats. Repeat the instructions between the * *. The amount of repeats is indicated.

If your work starts to curl a bit, don’t worry. This will disappear when you attach the mandala to the hoop!

Fasten off and attach the mandala to the hoop, see below chart for details

The chart

Attaching the mandala to the hoop

You can find a suitable hoop size for your mandala by measuring the diameter of the unstretched mandala and adding 20% (multiply by 1.2). Round off the number to an available hoop size.

Before you permanently attach the mandala to the hoop, it is useful to temporarily attach it to the hoop at some points. You can do this with stitch markers, pieces of yarn or reusable tie wraps. You can move/shape the mandala. If you are satisfied with how it looks, you can permanently attach the mandala to the hoop. There are several ways to do this:

  • Use pieces of yarn and a tapestry needle to fasten the mandala to the hoop at certain points. If you want to cover the hoop, you can wrap yarn around the hoop first.
  • Crochet the mandala into the hoop. Use sc around the hoop, and attach a part of the mandala after an x amount of stitches.
  • Threading the mandala in the hoop. Take a long piece of yarn and thread it along the hoop and hoops of the mandala.
  • Attach the mandala to the hoop by using jump rings.

I have a video available showing the different ways to attach a mandala to the hoop. You can find the video on YouTube: youtu.be/UbAYOcB213c. It’s in Dutch, but it has English subtitles.

You can choose to attach only the ‘leaves’ in the middle, or attach each leaf. Here are some examples:

Crocheted into the hoop, each ‘leaf’ attached

Wrapped the yarn around the hoop first, then used pieces of yarn and a needle to attach the ‘leafs’ in the middle

Attached with jump rings, only attached the ‘leafs’ in the middle
